What is an Energy Management System - EVEMS / EMS?
To put it simply, our energy management systems automatically allow an electrical device such as an Electric Vehicle (EV) to fast charge while there is electrical capacity in the building to do so and automatically stop charging for the short times there is not. It helps protect both the device it controls and the electrical equipment by intelligently monitoring the total power being used in the home and automatically deciding if there is enough remaining capacity for the device controlled to operate. From the electrical code perspective, it allows the addition of an EV charger, or other high-current devices like a Heat Pump, Hot Tub, A/C, etc. without adding anything to the load calculation for the electrical service. This eliminates the need for a costly electrical service or panel upgrade while providing a very fast EV charge rate and/or the longest device run time.
What does that mean in practical terms? The use of electrical devices that consume a lot of power is growing very fast. For example, think of how many homes have one or more of these electrical devices today that didn't 10 or 20 years ago: hot tubs, heat pumps, pool pumps, A/C, steam showers, electrical hot water tanks, electric heat, and of course the newest to the list EV chargers. The issue is that there is only so much power available to each home based on what was expected to be used by its inhabitants when it was built. If a home uses too much power for too long all electricity in the home will automatically be switched off until it is manually reset. This is a mandatory safety feature found in every home built in the last century and is there to prevent hazards like electrical fires. This loss of electricity could happen at any time, even unexpectedly, like while sleeping or on holidays, and have disastrous consequences. For example, loss of power would likely also mean loss of heat whether this is created by electricity, natural gas, or other sources. If this happens in the winter it could then result in frozen pipes and flooding. Electricity switching off could also mean loss of security systems, lighting, control systems, alarms, fridges or freezers, sump pumps, and the list goes on. Our energy managers make sure that the device connected to it will never be responsible for these issues. This provides an important level of safety and security for your home and those who live in it and is why its use is written into the electrical code in both the US and Canada.

Technical Information
Our patented Energy Management System (EMS) or EV Energy Management System (EVEMS) provides the ability to install up to an 11.5kWh or 48/50A electric vehicle charger on an existing electrical service that would otherwise cause overloading issues. No need for an electrical panel or service upgrade. Compatible with all major EV manufacturers and charge rates. An additional broader benefit is contributing to balancing public electrical grid loading and reliability.
It is also approved for use with other devices that can be load shed when required as clearly indicated on the labelling. For example, many have found success using it on Hot Tubs, Heat Pumps, A/C, and Steam Showers, etc. as long as the rating of the device is at, or below, 50 Amp continuous resistive or 40 FLA.
Key Benefits:
Allows a 48/50A EV charger (60A breaker) or any 50A end device on a 100A panel
Fast and Easy to install: 30-45 min.
Small size fits in tight areas around electrical panels (8" x 6" x 4")
Longest on times due to intelligent current monitoring
No need to disconnect the main service wires
No extra breakers needed
Solar grid tie installation compatible
Approved For Use By Intertek
Our devices bear the symbol above and are inspected and approved for use by Intertek, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) equivalent to similar UL and CSA approvals. This approval is recognized by Electrical Inspection Authorities in the US and Canada.
Why Are Fail-Safe Products Important?
Fail-Safe is an important consideration when selecting energy management systems as many devices use latching relays that can leave the controlled device in a "powered state" indefinitely if the controller fails. This presents a serious safety concern. In contrast, our energy managers use a contactor that will fail in a powered-off state and thus prevents this issue.
